Join Jnanapravaha Mumbai and Dr. Kurush F Dalal on a journey back in time to the beginnings of textile manufacture. When did clothing transition from hides to textiles? What journey did these textiles take? What went into their manufacture, their design, the making of looms, etc? What were the sources of their fibres and their colours? To understand the answers to these questions we have little choice but to turn towards archaeology and its allied disciplines.

The Art of Knowing brings together highlights from our collections to explore religious and practical knowledge across time, space, and cultures. Featuring stone sculptures, gilt bronzes, and painted manuscripts from India, Nepal, historical Tibet (in modern-day China), Bangladesh, Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia, this exhibition illuminates the critical role of visual culture in conveying Buddhist and Hindu teachings from the ninth to the twentieth centuries.
